Lung Cancer Screening Programme

Programme Introduction

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in Hong Kong – it accounts for 15.5% of all new cancer diagnosis according to the Department of Health’s data in 2021. The potential threat of lung cancer is further supported by statistics from China's National Cancer Centre in 2022, which confirm that lung cancer holds the top position in terms of cancer prevalence for both males and females.

Although lung cancer patients are predominantly males who are smokers aged 40 or above, it is important to note that a substantial number of patients are young females or non-smokers. From a clinical perspective, individuals with prolonged exposure to second-hand smoke or those with a family history of lung cancer are at higher risk for developing the disease.
To promote early screening and diagnosis, CUHK Medical Centre designed an evidence-based diagnostic programme for those with high risk factors or concerned about lung cancer risks. The programme is managed by specialists and uses low-dose CT scan as screening tool to detect early stage lung cancer or any other lesions.
